Before Buying a Poker Chip Set

While it is possible to play poker without the use of poker chips, your home games will go much more smoothly if you do use them. It is particularly difficult to run a tournament without using chips and even cash games are much easier without bills of different denominations flying around the table. Here are some things you need to consider when using poker chips.

When purchasing a poker chip set, make sure you get high quality chips. You want chips that will not break when thrown into a pot and you want chips that have a nice look and feel to them. Good poker chips weigh in the neighborhood of ten grams and come in a variety of colors and designs. You should shop around and look at a number of different poker chip sets before you purchase any. Keep in mind the poker chips you purchase are ones you are going to be looking at quite a lot if you play home games with any regularity.

If you are running a poker game, make sure you keep track of your poker chips. Don't let more than one person cash chips in and out. If there isn't enough money to exchange for the chips at the end of the game, you will be held responsible, so make sure you or someone you trust is the only person handling chip transactions.

Decide in advance how much each of your poker chips will be worth and keep those amounts standard every time you play. Most casinos already have set values attached to the various colors; the best approach is to use these same values as the casino poker chips.

You will have much more fun using poker chips in your games than using coins or paper money. Get yourself a reasonably priced poker chip set and have fun playing poker!
